SALT LABS
Introducing
We’re dedicated to helping you transform your Speech and Language Therapy service.
Our cultural and linguistic expertise underpins a bespoke, highly responsive service to enable your SALT team to achieve the best care possible in the most hassle-free way.
Our Story
SALT Labs was founded in 2022 by a team of academics who are cultural and linguistic specialists. Our work stems from a keen awareness of the lack of quality, standardised and validated tests available for Arabic speakers who are affected by speech and language disorders. This is despite Arabic being among the top 10 most widely spoken languages in the world. As speech and language therapists will know, the vast majority of assessment materials are based on translations or adaptations of existing tests in other languages. Such materials cannot account for the important cultural and linguistic differences particular to Arabic. Inevitably, this has a negative impact on the accuracy of language profiles created during assessment. We are committed to developing tests that assist speech and language therapists with producing more detailed and precise language profiles, leading to more accurate diagnoses and, in turn, more effective intervention design and enhanced patient outcomes.
Speech and Language Therapy, especially as far as assessment is concerned, still has much to gain by integrating digital technology into clinical practice. This became even more apparent during Covid when many SALT departments had to suspend or significantly reduce their service. However, SLTs perceived several benefits associated with having to work in new and innovative ways. During the crisis, the use of technology to deliver telehealth was experienced (by 70.7%) as positive and leading to changes that they wanted to see continued into the future (Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the speech and language therapy profession, pp.5-9). These developments motivated us to create a digital platform for delivering our tests that is also suitable for remote use. This helps to facilitate assessment when mobility issues and pressures on space make hospital visits difficult.
“The impact of technology on speech and language therapy is transforming how we provide services and how service users access those services. Technology can be time-saving, cost-effective and care-enhancing.”
— The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
Our goal is to play a role in alleviating some of the key challenges faced by speech and language professionals in the workplace today. We also want to support SLTs with working with patients who are bilingual/multilingual and speak underserved languages. Our assessment and results management process is designed to be flexible, time-saving and environmentally-friendly. The assessment experience is more seamless and comfortable for both therapists and patients. Post-session work is less onerous because reviewing automatically stored responses and results is easy and can be undertaken from any device, anywhere. Historical data can be analysed and learnt from, instead of being lost to paper-based systems. We think it’s time for SALT to benefit from digital technology on a par with other healthcare sectors already enjoying the advantages!
